Small hospital

Going hybrid: reduce fuel bills and increase power security

In most remote areas often there isn’t a functional grid to rely on. Small hospitals often rely on generators as their main source of power. But getting the fuel to these locations is a complex, costly affair and it might require a near full-time maintenance job to keep the generators going. Luckily with solar power, a green and more reliable hybrid solution is offered. This makes relying totally on generator power a thing of the past, reducing fuel bills and upgrading power security at the same time.

Reliable equipment and proper installation are obviously important, but just as important is to minimise the system's maintenance, since it is expensive to fly engineers to the location. With Victron Remote Monitoring end-users and installers always stay in the know, so they can prevent issues or definitive system failure. As some remote areas can get up to 70 lightning strikes/km²/year, sufficient surge protection is key along with the ability to move fast when things go wrong. This is why our large, worldwide repair network covers even the most remote areas with a fast service.

The power

to save lives

Remote, off-grid hospitals come in many sizes, but usually their size is very small compared to most city hospitals. Most have just one operation room, run critical vaccine freezers and have air conditioning. While most of the ‘action’ happens during the day, sterilising and cleaning happen in the early morning, which also means a significant power requirement before the sun is up. Let’s go through a few critical considerations to ensure this small off-grid hospital can continue to operate 24/7.

Why is the Quattro a good inverter for this Off-grid system?

Our extremely resilient Quattro inverter/chargers have powered the most demanding off-grid challenges for many years, in the harshest of environments. It’s two AC-inputs automatically connect to the active (generator) source. The Pure Sine Wave inverter technology safely powers sensitive electronics such as computers and any load problem free, even if the input from the generators can sometimes be far from perfect. It’s hybrid PowerAssist ensures generators aren’t overloaded with power peaks: it adds power from the batteries instead. Thanks to it’s powerful adaptive charger, a Lithium bank can be quickly charged by generators (or the grid if present). Virtually unlimited power can be offered through parallel operation, three or split phase operation are also possible, meaning your system can grow over time with your ambitions.
Inverters convert DC power into AC power. Inverters should be sized to handle the average AC load continuously and should match the expected peak power current of the simultaneous AC loads. See all our inverters/chargers

    The professionals' choice

Quattro 48/15000/200-100/100: This inverter/charger works with 48V battery banks, it’s 15000Va AC inverter output capacity is perfectly sized for this small hospital and can handle a peak power of 25.000W, more than enough to accommodate the expected 15kWp. Its large charger can charge with 200 Amps, and has 2x 100 Amp maximum AC current inputs which can be limited to not overload the two standby generators of different sizes. More Quattro’s can be added in a parallel configuration to stay on par with a growing power requirement over time.
All our inverters are renowned for their extreme resilience in the toughest of circumstances. For installations installed in high-temperature environments, please consider the temperature derating factor when sizing your system, see the datasheets for more info.

Lithium or lead-acid battery bank for this Off-grid system, in what size?

There are many reasons why to choose for either technology. But let’s have a quick glance at the cost-effectiveness and the practical differences.

Cost-effectiveness of Lithium batteries vs lead-acid batteries

When choosing an off-grid battery bank there is primarily the choice in technology: lithium or lead-acid. For off-grid applications, Lithium has quickly become the new standard in larger (residential and commercial) systems because of performance reasons, but also due to their lower cost-per-cycle. For smaller systems the lower cost-per-cycle situation is also true, however the higher upfront investment led many to consider Lead-acid batteries. Due to a continuous downwards price pressure, the tipping point towards Lithium for small off-grid systems is closer than ever and in some regions already there.

Practical differences of Lithium batteries vs lead-acid batteries

    Using Lithium in off-grid systems
    Using Lead-acid in off-grid systems
Lithium is the new standard in larger off-grid systems, because of its reliability, performance in high temperatures, optimal scalability, fast (dis)charging abilities (ideal for solar powered applications) and from an investment perspective: a long cycle life which translates into a lower cost-per-cycle compared to lead-acid. Also, it is relatively ‘maintenance free’, which is often seen as a favourable factor in designing reliable solutions, especially for remote installations. Practically they are way lighter and more compact, ideal for cases with space- or weight restrictions.
    Using Lead-acid in off-grid systems
Lead-acid battery types also are a viable option; off-grid installations have relied on them for years and many still do. While they offer a lower initial investment, they do require more discipline by it’s end-users, ensuring the system is closely monitored, isn’t discharged too deeply, fully charged regularly, internal battery liquids filled. When this is taken care of, lead-acid based systems do provide a safe and reliable option. Looking at the total life cycle of a system, lead-acid batteries often have a higher cost-per-cycle and these days, in some regions, even a higher upfront investment.

Victron Energy offers full flexibility when it comes to selecting an off-grid battery bank of choice. Next to our own range of quality batteries, the choice includes a number of well supported third party Lithium battery manufacturers that can be easily integrated through the use of a GX-device. This flexibility enables our customers to perfectly match their off-grid needs for their unique power situation.

Check the manufacturer's data sheets for the expected cycle life and see what works in your (business) case. Each manufacturer comes from a different background and each may have it’s pros and cons for your local situation (availability, support, performance in hot/cold climates, installability, pricing, etc). Therefore, feel free to reach out to a nearby Victron Authorised installer and ask for their local know-how.

Victron Energy is renowned for support of third party Lithium battery manufacturers. Great efforts are spent to ensure a deep and problem free integration with other brands such as FreedomWON, BYD, Pylontech, MG Energy, to work seamlessly with Victron GX equipment. When working with unsupported brands, a Victron Battery Monitor is recommended to pass on accurate state of charge readings to the wider system. Ask your local authorised installer for recommendations. Check the supported brands Ask your local Victron installer

    The professionals' Choice

Lithium: 7x 13,8kWh BYD B-Box Lithium battery modules: This third party Lithium battery bank can provide ±80kWh of usable energy, enough to power the night-time loads and is ready to assist with peak-demands or support the solar array on cloudy moments during the day. Due to it’s fast charging capabilities the bank can be fully charged in ±3 hours by the solar array, or by the generator(s) when battery parameters get critical due to longer periods without sufficient solar yield.

The battery banks parameters are exchanged to perfectly work together with the wider Victron Energy system through a GX-device, which is required to manage charge and discharge limits, to exchange error codes and state of charge information. A GX device comes with the added advantage that this data also becomes available for monitoring in our free Victron Remote Monitoring (VRM) portal.

How much solar works for this Off-grid system, with which MPPT controller?

Every off-grid system is different and each location may provide unique challenges. Many variables need to be considered such as the day and night time loads, losses, the efficiency of the panels and their geographic location with respect to solar irradiance (the amount of sunlight that will fall on a given spot), the inclination and orientation of the solar panels, shading and dirt or snow causing losses in the array itself. Other factors such as local costs of solar panels, battery banks and solar array cleaning also come into play. This is why every system is different and designing an off-grid system is a local expert's job. However, to get an idea, see the below and explore our basic solar and off-grid calculators.

Logically, at a bare minimum, the daily energy consumption should be able to be harvested, stand-alone time included and losses compensated. Also safety margins determined by case-specific influences are relevant. While there are many considerations and methods to calculate with, this one below aims to start to give you an idea.

    Calculating the solar yield
Every off-grid system is different and each location provides different challenges and a different solar yield, so solar calculations come down to local and practical experience. This is why our global network of Authorised Installers is trained with 45 years of know-how, and are carefully selected for their (local) knowledge and quality of service. Use our DC calculator Use our off-grid calculator Ask your local installer
Daily energy consumption * (1 + system losses) / average year round solar peak hours * case specific influences = Off-grid solar array size.
Based on the geographical location and season, the solar irradiance varies. Use our solar calculator to get an idea of your local solar insolation factor.

    The professionals' choice

5x SmartSolar MPPT 250/100 & 32kWp solar array: Power from the hospital’s solar array is harvested by five solar charge controllers that accept a maximum PV voltage of 250V and can charge with 5x100A. They are linked, synchronized and behave as one large charger, charging seven lithium batteries providing 13.8kWh of storage each. In this case, the 32kWp solar array was oversized significantly compared to the daily energy consumption, it will generate an average of 32kWp x 6 hours of sun = 192kWp. A couple of reasons have lead to this decision:
    • The power profile: a large day-time load compared to a small night-time load; enough capacity to both power the day-time loads and charge the battery.
    • The ability to counter grey days with solar, instead of having to invest in greater autonomy powered by a larger and (way) more expensive battery bank
    • To minimise the cleaning requirements of the array.

This setup allows the day-time loads to be powered ‘directly’ by the solar array (through the inverter/charger), the remaining yield is used to charge the batteries which provide the energy for the smaller nighttime consumption (lights, security) and intense cleaning in the early morning (when the sun isn’t out).

When to choose an AC-PV or DC-PV solar array or both?

There is a choice to make when it comes to the different technologies of converting solar energy into consumable power: DC-or AC coupled solar power, or- in a hybrid model- both.

    DC-coupled solar or DC-PV
    AC-solar coupled solar or AC-PV
DC solar chargers have a very high 98% efficiency from panel to the battery bank, which makes DC the excellent choice when most energy needs to be stored in the battery banks for the night consumers. Through an inverter such as the Quattro, day time consumers can be powered as well (inverter efficiencies of ±96% need to be taken into account). Victron Energy Solar chargers can bring (fully) depleted battery banks back to normal to automatically resume operations. This is critically important in lithium batteries, where self discharge loads can permanently destroy a battery.
    AC-solar coupled solar or AC-PV
AC solar inverters have a ±94% efficiency from panel directly to their AC output, which makes them more efficient to directly power heavy daytime-only consumers such as air conditioning or heavy kitchen/ office appliances and thus helps to increase the sustained and total kW power that the system can supply. Using AC-PV as the only charging source for the battery bank is not recommended due to efficiency and fail-safe reasons: AC-PV requires a grid to (re)start, which is why it cannot start itself when batteries are empty.

The choice between technologies depends on many factors, a main one is when power consumption peaks are expected: during the day or at night (or both). In a good off-grid practice with larger systems requiring significant energy during both the day and night, a hybrid combination of both AC-PV and DC-PV is often used, using each of their advantages. Victron Energy is renowned for the integration capabilities of third party PV-inverter brands such as Fronius.

The minimum total yield of a DC-PV only array needs to equal the total daily consumption (24h) and its losses, calculating with the average of available sun hours.

    DC-PV only

DC-PV based solar chargers are way more efficient for charging battery banks, compared to AC-PV.

During daytime the batteries are efficiently recharged for the night consumers and at the same time daytime consumers are mostly powered with energy from the solar array, through the solar charger and the inverter/charger. When the solar yield is reduced, energy from the battery bank is taken to power the loads.

For small to medium size systems DC-PV is the go-to standard. They can also power larger off-grid systems, as long as the solar panels and solar charge controllers can be placed in close proximity of the battery bank and the inverters: DC requires thicker cabling and is limited in length due to energy losses. This is not always practical, especially when roof-space is limited.

In large systems with significant day-time consumers in a system, a Hybrid setup is a good and durable off-grid practice.

    Hybrid: AC-PV and DC-PV combined

A combination of AC- and DC-PV is used when there are large daytime consumers and a selection of the loads need to be powered through the night.

AC-PV takes care of the day-time load and uses its excess power to charge the batteries, DC-PV is used for efficient battery charging, its excess power can be used to power the loads. At any time if the load exceeds the power available from the AC-PV inverters, the Quattro inverters provide the difference from battery storage or even the generator can be automatically started.

For off-grid systems with AC-solar inverters we always recommend to include a DC-array for efficient battery charging, but also to bring the system backup automatically in case the battery bank is completely empty. AC inverters cannot start themselves when there isn’t a grid present. A DC array can charge the batteries, which will reactivate the Victron inverters to create the grid. With a grid present, the AC-PV inverter will also come back online automatically.

The AC-solar array is sized to power the total of concurrent day-time loads directly such as air conditioning, laundry- and kitchen equipment. The AC-PV inverter is sized to accommodate the average loads. The DC-array is sized to efficiently charge the battery bank which powers the night-time consumers.

    The professionals' choice

32kWp solar array based on DC-PV: Due to the smaller size of this system, DC-PV only was chosen, meaning the solar energy is harvested by five Victron Energy Solar charge MPPT controllers and stored with an astonishing 99% efficiency in the Lithium battery bank. The 32kWp solar array generates 196kWp of solar energy vs. the 120kWh daily energy consumption, enough to also power the daytime loads through the MPPT and inverter. Naturally this system can be upgraded to stay on par with the demand. Feel free to consult an authorised local Victron Energy installer to create a solar plan that can grow with your ambitions.

How to manage generators in an off-grid system?

Victron Inverter/Chargers work seamlessly with a large range of power plants and are renowned for their ability to efficiently manage generators, minimising their use and even downscaling their capacity.

With the Victron Energy hybrid generator concept you can now become less reliant on noisy, fuel consuming, maintenance heavy polluters. In the hybrid concept, solar is prioritized, with the battery bank and the inverter taking the primary role to power the critical loads. Only when the batteries reach critical levels (in case of a few grey days) the system can be programmed to auto start/stop the generator, which will then power the loads and charge the batteries back to a certain percentage. With this hybrid concept, your fuel and maintenance bills reduce significantly.

Thanks to our inverters with PowerAssist, you can now also choose a smaller generator, the inverter will use additional energy from the battery to power peak loads. With our long list of possible settings to auto start/stop the generator from the GX device, you can even program the system with generator-free times, to avoid the genset from being started in the middle of the night.

    The professionals' choice

In this case for the hospital two backup generators of 9kVA and 6kVA were added to the two AC-inputs of the Quattro, and are fully controlled by the Cerbo GX. On grey days the generator(s) can jump in when the battery bank's State Of Charge (SOC) reaches critical levels, until the battery level gets to a preset level. Both of the generators can be auto started/stopped based on a wide variety of custom settings and conditions.

AC devices (single phase)

Every ‘household’ appliance or ‘heavy duty tool’ you would expect at home or at work can also be found in independent energy systems. All these devices need an Alternating Current (230V or 110V) to run.

Some of these devices such as computers can be sensitive to the quality of the inverted power (bad shore- or generator AC-input power can influence this quality negatively). Motor driven or heat generating equipment may require a high start-up current. All our inverters produce a pure sine wave, even when the AC input quality is less good, ensuring that sensitive loads can be powered and enjoy a peak-power of generally 2x of the inverters rated capacity to power even the heaviest of loads, or basically any load, problem free.

A recommendation would be to work with appliances that have an A+ energy rating or ideally higher (A+++) to minimise the use of electrical energy, especially for the larger consumers (Fridge, inverter air conditioners and choose LED lights).

Examples of AC-devices:

  • Heavy duty tools such as a drilling machine or a jigsaw
  • Computers
  • Phone chargers
  • Fridge and freezer
  • Lights
  • Coffee machine
  • Microwave
  • or basically any AC powered device you can think of

Cerbo GX & GX Touch 50

The Victron Energy Cerbo GX is the communication-centre of your systems installation, allowing you to always have perfect control from wherever you are and maximises its performance. The optional GX Touch 50 is a companion to the Cerbo GX, it’s five inch touch screen display gives an instant overview of your system and allows you to adjust settings in the blink of an eye.

Instantly monitor the battery state of charge, power consumption, power harvest from PV, generator, and mains, or check tank levels and temperature measurements. Easily control the shore power input current limit, (auto)start/stop generator(s) or even set quiet periods to avoid starting the generator in the middle of the night. Change any setting to optimise the system, follow up on alerts, perform diagnostic checks and resolve challenges remotely with the free Victron Remote Management (VRM) portal.

The Cerbo GX is an easy to use visual system and turns any power challenge into an effortless experience. Simply connect through our Victron Remote Management (VRM) portal, or access directly, using the optional GX Touch 50 screen, a Multi Functional Display or our VictronConnect app thanks to its added Bluetooth capability.

To successfully integrate a third-party battery bank, a GX-device such as the Cerbo GX is mandatory to manage charge and discharge limits, to exchange error codes and state of charge information with the wider Victron system.

See all our chargers

Generator

Generators produce mostly AC current to offer independent electrical power where needed. They help charge the batteries and power the (peak)loads in case of grid or shore power shortings or failure.

In all cases, Victron Energy solutions can help you reduce the reliance on these noisy, fuel consuming and maintenance heavy generators, providing an eco-friendly and cost-saving alternative.

Some smaller systems can now just run on batteries, other systems can do with smaller generators, or less generator time. For larger systems, generators may be an unmissable component in the setup, but the dependence on them can be reduced, for instance by adding solar power or battery backup power, only using the generator when the state of charge is too low, or the (peak) power demand too high.

Victron Energy systems are recognised in the market for their great ability to master hybrid generator concepts, which comes with several advantages:

  • Longer generator free periods.
  • Reduced rating of the generator.
  • Reduces shore power requirement.
  • Uninterrupted AC power on board.
  • Increase redundancy and therefore safety.
  • Easy programming of (multiple) generator start/stop rules, based on a variety of system parameters.

GX 4G modules

A GX 4G module will add mobile internet connectivity to your Victron Energy system. When your system is in range of a 4G network, it will send data to the VRM website and you can monitor the system from your smartphone. The module adds GPS tracking, recording your trips and putting up a geo-fence around the installation. You will get an alert via mail when the system travels outside the geo-fence area.

Victron Energy offers multiple 4G modules and the Global Link 520 modem, which operates without any monthly fees or subscriptions, for the first five years and several 4G modules. See our 4G Modems See our Global Link 520

The service battery, also called a house battery or battery bank, stores power for the system's consumers, providing autonomous power especially for moments when input power sources aren’t (fully) available.

Victron Energy offers several battery technologies, all designed for professional performance, reliability and long service life in the most demanding environments. They come with a 2 year worldwide warranty and our datasheets offer a fair picture of the performance and expected life cycles, meaning no investment surprises along the way.

Victron Energy also offers full flexibility when it comes to selecting an off-grid battery bank of choice. A large number of well supported third party Lithium battery manufacturers can be easily integrated through the use of a mandatory GX-device. This flexibility enables our customers to perfectly match their off-grid needs for their unique power situation. When working with unsupported brands, a Victron Energy Battery Monitor is required to pass on accurate state of charge readings to the wider system.

While there are multiple technologies to choose between, the main choice is between lead-acid and lithium which mainly depends on the expectations of the performance, cost-per-cycle and physical aspects (size/weight).

  • Choose Lead-Acid when:
  • Use occasionally
  • Lower purchase cost
  • Weight and space are not an issue
  • Normal charging
  • Choose Lithium when:
  • Intense daily demand
  • Lower cost per cycle
  • Weight and space considerations
  • Super fast charging

The above probably cuts 45 years of battery development expertise a bit short, for more info check our deep dive.

Solar Chargers

A solar charger gathers energy from your solar panels, and stores it in your batteries. Using the latest, fastest technology, our solar chargers maximise this energy-harvest, driving it intelligently to achieve full charge in the shortest possible time whilst maintaining the batteries health, ensuring better performance… and a longer life.

In most cases, the light intensity of the solar panels is changing constantly, which affects their performance. Victron Energy solar controllers use ultra fast maximum power point tracking to squeeze up to 30% more power out of your panels.

Smaller models have an intelligent load-output, preventing damage caused by running batteries 'flat'. Smart models allow the solar harvest to be tracked and analysed through the free VictronConnect app, other connectivity options allow a remote connection through our VRM portal. For larger systems, solar chargers can be synchronized, so they act as one large and very efficient charger. For systems with large series connected PV arrays charging 48 V DC battery banks, high voltage models are available.
